This pan is not quite as heavy as I like, but it works very well in the kitchen. It distributes heat well, the non-stick surface is sturdy (for such coatings–it still wears out), and the rounded inner surface (with no rivets) makes it very convenient to move the food. While many good pans have very sturdy handle attachments using rivets, the rivets make the food catch or stick–this pan avoids this problem.

Sowohl der Film als auch seine Darstellung sind völlig raffiniert – beginnen mit einer trügerischen Einfachheit und entwickeln sich dann zu etwas Komplexem, Kraftvollem und überraschend Sanftem. Ebenso wie Erbarmungslos Eastwoods Erbe innerhalb des Western-Genres tragisch beleuchtete, kommentiert Gran Torino das städtische Erbe von Dirty Harry und seiner gewalttätigen Spießgesellen. Und zudem stellt der Film eine weise Meditation über Amerika innerhalb eines bestimmten Augenblicks seiner Geschichte dar, in Hinblick auf die Rassenkonflikte, die Wirtschaft, den Geist. Man könnte das Ganze eine Botschaft „zur Lage der Nation“ nennen. Aber nur mit einem schiefen Grinsen auf den Lippen. Der letzte Dirty Harry ist in Wirklichkeit ein knurriger Walt: Walt Kowalski (Eastwood spielt einen Senioren), Witwer, Veteran des Koreakriegs, Automechaniker im Ruhestand und der letzte weiße Bewohner seiner Nebenstraße in Detroit. Es ist schwer zu sagen, wer ihm mehr auf die Nerven geht: seine eigene Verwandtschaft (ein ziemlich blöder Haufen) oder die Hmong-Familien, die seine neuen Nachbarn sind. Kowalski ist Rassist, denn es kam ihm nie in den Sinn, warum er keiner sein sollte. Außerdem ist das gemeinsame Herumhacken auf ethnischen Vorurteilen der Dreh- und Angelpunkt zwischen ihm und seinen Arbeiterklasse-Kumpels. Die Umstände – und zwei junge Leute aus dem Nachbarhaus, die schlagfertige Sie (Ahney Her) und ihr von Konflikten geplagter Bruder Thao (Bee Vang) – wollen Walt in eine neue Gemeinschaft einführen und feiern ihn als Helden, nachdem er gegenüber ein paar Rabauken seine Knarre zieht. Doch der Gang der Dinge wird den Zuschauer immer wieder aufs Neue verblüffen. Eastwood entschied sich dafür, seinen Film im wirtschaftlich gebeutelten Detroit zu drehen – eine kluge Entscheidung, denn seine Vorstellung von Walts Welt in klassischer Handschrift ist das, was wirklich zählt. Jedes Stück Rasen, jede Terrasse, jeder Kellerraum trägt zur Geschichte bei – vor allem die Werkstatt/Garage, in der der Gran Torino steht, den Walt während einer besseren Zeit einstmals montieren half. “A Perfect Circle is not a side project,” proclaim the members of Perfect Circle. It’s a caution worth heeding, since the most identifiable name in the band is that of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool. On the other hand, one wouldn’t be much inclined to file this one under “side project” anyway. The musicians involved go to great lengths to create something distinctive, and if the uniformity of sound can be attributed to the fact that guitarist Billy Howerdel (whose previous songwriting credits include Tool, the Smashing Pumpkins, and David Bowie) is responsible for the lion’s share of the music, well, the others aren’t exactly marching in lockstep. Keenan’s vocals here are quite different from anything heard from him before. Subtle, thoughtful, sober, they’re a far cry from Keenan’s work with Tool, which is what makes this album more than a side-project curiosity. While the singer remains the same, this isn’t a Tool album at all. Tool is a heavy, heavy angst driven band. The songs on this album are melodic but, not flowery. Maynard gets to show off his intensity, but, in a different light. Tools tends to play songs that are reactions to situations, while Perfect Circle is more about the situation itself. Desires and feeling that drive the situation. Being a big fan of Tool, it’s great to see Maynard explore his music with a different voice.
